We aren’t counting on this gain to stick yet, but it’s a great example of the power of strategy.
The best strategy on English is to think about patterns rather than what sounds best.
Some students will be able to ‘hear’ their way to correct answer choice F above. But I prefer my students notice F is simpler than the other 3 choices. The ‘1 simple vs. 3 wordy’ pattern reveals a pattern of simplicity, which means you can select F with little thought required.
My emphasis to this student in Week 1 was not about English rules, but was instead about the strategy of pattern-first. To her credit, she actually tried it and got rewarded with a great gain.
This is just one example of hundreds when students know much more than their score would indicate. Usually, they’re using the wrong tool for the job. The goal of test prep is to know which tool to use and when to use it.
